The implementation of the Faculty/Peer Student Mentoring Program will further enhance the Emerging Ethnic Engineers Program through a structured activity involving engineering faculty and E3 upper-class students. Twenty engineering faculty have agreed to serve as mentors.
Dr. Carla Purdy Associate Professor in Computing Engineering, and Mr. Kenneth Simonson Director of Academics for the E3 Program will conducted a faculty/student mentoring training session December 17 2008. Dr. Purdy has conducted the faculty mentoring training session for the WISE Program for past several years.
The objective of the session was to: 1) overview of the program, 2) roles and responsibilities of faculty, students, and administrators, 3) anticipated outcomes of the program. After the training session there will be a kickoff of the program the first week of January, all faculty, students, and administrators will be asked to attend an informal social launching the program.
Beginning in January, faculty and upper-classo E3 students will be asked to meet with all E3 students in their department once a month to discuss their progress, issues, accomplishments, and current departmental activities. Faculty will asked to document this meeting and forward this information to the Director. The director and faculty will make the appropriate intervention necessary to assist the student(s).
The upper-class E3 students are asked to meet on a bi-weekly basis with the students in their department to and discuss their academic progress, social issues, and any concerns that may affect the performance of students in their department. They will be asked to document this meeting and forward the information to the E3 Director.
The E3 Director will meet with the Faculty Coordinator each month to discuss the progress of the program. A survey will be administered to all participants and a focus group of faculty and students will be contacted to measure the progress and any necessary improvement in the program.
